This is My Genre Book Tag (Fantasy edition)

I think I owe a lot to #SciFiMonth in terms of helping me with my blog post inspiration. I saw Maryam at The Curious SFF Reader do this tag, and I decided to do it myself! Since I’ve been talking a lot about science fiction, I’m gonna do this for fantasy. Here we go!!

What is your favorite genre?

Well, honestly fantasy and science fiction are tied for me. But as I said I’ve been talking about too much science fiction (if that’s even possible) so I’m gonna talk about fantasy today!

Who is your favorite author from that genre?

I have two current favorites – Tamora Pierce and Seanan McGuire. Tamora Pierce has been my favorite since I was a child. My mom introduced me to her books! They were perfect as I was growing up, they all feature heroines with lots of different strengths. They remain my comfort books, and I reread them all the time. She still has new books coming out and I eagerly await them each time!!

As an adult I discovered Seanan McGuire’s books, and man I just feel so lucky that I discovered both of these authors at what seems like the perfect time for me. Seanan has written soooo many books, but my favorite series of hers is the October Daye series. It follows a half-fae adult woman living her life in San Francisco and I just, I don’t know. Toby (the main character) is a bit of a mess and is always trying to get her shit together, and that’s just how I feel as an adult haha. The series has become another comfort series for me, and it brings me so much happiness.

What is it about the genre that keeps pulling you back?

Is it cliche to say magic? I mean, that’s kind of the basis of fantasy right? So it feels a little bit like cheating. But I really do love how all the different fantasy authors can create their own kind of magic. Both the literal magic systems in their books, but also the magic of different kinds of stories that they tell. The real world is just so mundane!! Magic gives me that excitement and newness haha.

What is the book that started your love for that genre?

I honestly don’t really know. My parents were reading books to me I think pretty much since I was born. A lot of those picture books definitely had magic/fantasy elements in them. Since books have been such a big part of my life for so long, it’s difficult for me to pinpoint one book, rather than everything just put together!

If you had to recommend at least one book from your favorite genre to a non-reader, or someone looking to start reading this genre, what book would you choose and why?

Okay this is a really hard question. I think I’ll do it in two parts though: recs for a non-reader, and recs for a reader wanting to try the genre. First, for someone who isn’t a reader:

For someone who *is* a reader but doesn’t read much fantasy, here are a few of my recs:

Why do you read?

Basically for escapism haha. I just want to get away from the real for a while, and live in a world where anything is possible!

What is your favorite genre? I think I’m also supposed to tag blogger friends here, but I’ll just say please if anyone reading this feels like it, I’d love to see your answers!
