Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Loved with <5000 Ratings on Goodreads

February 19, 2019 by Mackenzie 17 Comments

Thank you to That Artsy Reader Girl for running Top Ten Tuesday! So the official topic for this week is “Books I Loved with <2000 Ratings on Goodreads” but uhhh I guess I read popular books haha. I couldn’t find 10 with less than 2000 ratings, so I upped the limit to 5000. Which in my book is still underrated.

I’m going to start with books with the lowest number of ratings and go up! So here’s my ten for the week.

A Bookish Valentine’s Day for both the Romantic and Non-Romantic

February 14, 2019 by Mackenzie 6 Comments

I’m gonna be real here for a second: I HATE Valentine’s Day. I think it’s a stupid capitalist holiday created to make people spend money. I hate seeing all the red and pink everywhere. And I know that makes me a bit of a grinch but hey, I’m not against romance! I just think you should be telling the person/people you love that you love them every day, not just on this one day.

So I didn’t want to write an entire post on love and relationships in books. Don’t get me wrong, as much as I am a grinch I do like a good romance when it’s done well. But there are amazing books out there without romance! And sometimes I just don’t want to read about romance, I just want some good action and fighting and politics and friendships, y’know?

I wanted to share both sides: some of my favorite books without any romance (for those of us feeling non-romantic) and some books with my favorites couples (for those us feeling like reading about some romance).

For the Killing of Kings

February 12, 2019 by Mackenzie 2 Comments

eARC provided by St. Martin’s Press for review (via NetGalley)

Alright listen up you all! This book has been criminally under-exposed, seeing as how it comes out in less than two weeks and I’ve seen it absolutely nowhere except on NetGalley! If you’re a high fantasy fan, I think you’ll enjoy this one.

This book had pretty much everything I love – a cast of characters that all have their own strengths and weaknesses and are all fun to read about; magic!; an innovative world setup that I haven’t seen before; fight scenes on both small and large scales; and epic quests (or not so much as a quest as a fleeing from a recently discovered murdery conspiracy).

Cranesong: Author Interview and Book Review

February 10, 2019 by Ri 2 Comments

When was the last time you discovered a new author whose work you ended up loving? It happened with Cranesong by Rona Wang for us and we are thrilled to share this book with you and tell you why we loved it.

We were fortunate enough to get advance copies of the eBook and were also able to interview Rona. Thank you to Half Mystic Press for coordinating this interview! To give you an idea about Cranesong, see what others are saying:

Praise for Cranesong

“The stories in Cranesong are the stories I’ve been waiting to read my entire life. They are the girlhood secrets, untranslatable sorrows, and quiet violences that often surround us but never quite catch our attention until they’re told by a writer like Rona Wang, whose words will uplift you just as much as they will shatter you.”

—Erin O’Malley, 2018 Lambda Literary Fellow and editor of The Ellis Review

“Captivating and ghostly, Cranesong disarms like no other. These stories are unapologetic about what it means to be Asian American and hurting, following different adolescents as they navigate the reclamation that comes with learning to be and become. Cranesong glitters and gleams, showcasing what Rona Wang does best: capturing the world in all its minute and wonderfully bizarre truths.”

—Margaret Zhang, editor-in-chief of Glass Kite Anthology, poetry and fiction published in SOFTBLOW, DIALOGIST, and Gigantic Sequins
