Looking Back at June 2021
We are halfway done with the year! Wow that’s a weird sentence to both write and read. I don’t think I like it, haha. Wouldn’t it be nice if time could slow the heck down?? June in particular seemed to go really quickly for me. I spent a lot of it visiting my family finally, after over a year! So I didn’t really end up reading much. But I did have some fun blog posts that I’m proud. So I’ll tell you a little about the one book I did read, and then do a little blog post round up in case you missed any of them!

Cee has been trapped on an abandoned island for three years without any recollection of how she arrived, or memories from her life prior. All she knows is that somewhere out there, beyond the horizon, she has a sister named Kay, and it’s up to Cee to cross the ocean and find her.
In a world apart, 16-year-old STEM prodigy Kasey Mizuhara lives in an eco-city built for people who protected the planet―and now need protecting from it. With natural disasters on the rise due to climate change, eco-cities provide clean air, water, and shelter. Their residents, in exchange, must spend at least a third of their time in stasis pods, conducting business virtually whenever possible to reduce their environmental footprint. While Kasey, an introvert and loner, doesn’t mind the lifestyle, her sister Celia hated it. Popular and lovable, Celia much preferred the outside world. But no one could have predicted that Celia would take a boat out to sea, never to return.
Now it’s been three months since Celia’s disappearance, and Kasey has given up hope. Logic says that her sister must be dead. But nevertheless, she decides to retrace Celia’s last steps. Where they’ll lead her, she does not know. Her sister was full of secrets. But Kasey has a secret of her own.
One of the most twisty, surprising, engaging page-turner YAs you’ll read this year—We Were Liars meets Black Mirror, with a dash of Studio Ghibli.
The one and only book I read this month was this one! And I read it at the very beginning of the month haha. Though I didn’t have a high quantity month, it was definitely a high quality month, as I LOVED this book. You can find my mini review for it in this post. The cover here is the exclusive edition done by Owlcrate, and it is beauuuutiful. I love the purple tones in it!
Blog Post Roundup
I started off the month with a post about Greek mythology retellings. I got reeeeally into the video game Hades last month, and it sparked an obsession – well, re-obsession – with Greek mythology. Since it’s such a popular subject, there are retellings across all different kinds of media, which I talk about in that post!
Next up, I wrote some mini reviews. I meant to do them throughout the month, but that didn’t happen since I didn’t read much haha. Oh well! This mini review post includes some highlights from all different genres – sci-fi, fantasy, contemporary, and even horror! As I mentioned above, one of the books in this was my one June read.
Since June is Pride month, my friends and I decided to talk about books with queer BIPOC characters for our Happy Place 5 feature. There are so many more books I could have included on this list, but we limit ourselves to five haha. If you like this post, then do check out my friend Crini’s post and blog – she posts all about queer SFF books!
So I wrote about Greek retellings, but I also love all types of retellings of different myths and legends. In this post, I listed some upcoming retellings that I’m really excited about! A quick preview: a Robin Hood retelling, a remix of Treasure Island in a Chinese setting, a retelling of a Korean folktale, and more!
June is a great month not just because it’s Pride month, but also because my mom’s birthday is in June! In her honor, I wrote about books that have some awesome mom characters. You can find it here!
And lastly, in case you didn’t have enough books on your TBR already, I talked about ten upcoming releases that I’m really excited for! And none of them even overlap with my upcoming retellings post hahah. Sorry not sorry for adding books for you to read!!
How was your month? Did you read any good books? Write any fun blog posts? Tell me all about it!
