March 2023 Monthly Wrap Up!
Soooo I guess I never shared my March wrap up huh? To be fair, during March I got sucked into a hole of reading the InCryptid books and when I looked up, it was suddenly like a week into April. And then it took me the rest of April to finish writing this post lol. But anyway, I consumed a lot of media in March so let’s get into it!
Books I Read
- The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco
- A Guide to Being Just Friends by Sophie Sullivan
- The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton
- Brotherhood by Mike Chen
- Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster
- The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco
- The Shadowglass by Rin Chupeco
- Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire
- Midnight Blue-Light Special by Seanan McGuire
- Half-Off Ragnarok by Seanan McGuire
- Pocket Apocalypse by Seanan McGuire
- Chaos Choreography by Seanan McGuire
- Magic for Nothing by Seanan McGuire
As you can see, I had a pretty busy reading month haha. 13 books!! And honestly enjoyed all of them. I read the entirety of the Bone Witch trilogy by Rin Chupeco, and it definitely filled my desire for more necromancy books haha. Brotherhood is a Star Wars novella following Obi-Wan and Anakin in the time between Episodes 2 and 3 (i.e. during the Clone Wars). It was really well done, and the relationship between those two characters is just so deep.
The highlight of the month was reading the first 6 books of the InCryptid series by Seanan McGuire! The series follows a family of cryptozoologists, who work to protect the world’s various cryptids. The books are SO FUN. The characters are engaging, the cryptids are fascinating, and there are talking mice that love cake and cheese. I read the first 6 books in 6 days, I was on such a roll haha. I definitely recommend the series if you like urban fantasy! Even if you don’t, this series might be a good one to try if you want to try out the genre.
Movies and TV I Watched
- The Beach (adventure/drama; directed by Danny Boyle)
- Millions (comedy/drama; directed by Danny Boyle)
- Sunshine (sci-fi psychological thriller; directed by Danny Boyle)
- The Mandalorian (Star Wars universe; sci-fi action/adventure; Disney+ original series)
- Our Flag Means Death (historical adventure/romcom; HBOMax original series)
This month, my partner and I continued our watch of Danny Boyle films. My favorite of the three we watched was definitely Sunshine. There are a shocking amount of big stars in this movie!! Michelle Yeoh, Chris Evans, Cillian Murphey, Rose Byrne, and more. I’m really surprised it isn’t more popular. I normally don’t watch psychological thrillers, but I love me a good sci-fi movie haha.
Also season 3 of The Mandalorian started this month, so of course I had to watch that! Star Wars gets a lot of flak in general, and this season admittedly doesn’t have the best writing, but I still love it. Grogu is just so cute!! I think the dive into Mandalorian culture and lore might be a bit much for the casual viewer, but I’m super interested in it. I’m a pretty big Star Wars fan haha.
Our Flag Means Death is a show I’ve been meaning to watch since it first came out, but for some reason held off until now. I’ve been watching it with some bookstagram friends. Being able to watch with friends is wonderful! We use Teleparty for Chrome, since we are all in different countries. OFMD is such a delight!! I now understand everyone’s obsession with it haha.
Games I Played
- Pokémon Violet (made by Game Freak and Nintendo; available on Nintendo Switch)
- Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion (made by Snoozy Kazoo and Graffiti Games; available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Playstation, and mobile)
- Vampire Survivors (made by Luca Galante (aka poncle); available on Steam, Xbox, and mobile)
- Teamfight Tactics (made by Riot Games; available through the League of Legends client and on mobile)
I don’t know if I should continue to put Teamfight Tactics in these wrap ups, since I play it constantly haha. But the new set went live at the end of March, so I spent the time before that trying to get a higher rank before ranks reset. I didn’t make my goal but I had a good time playing, which is what really matters.
March was my birthday month, and I used some of my birthday money to buy myself a Steam Deck. For those of you who don’t know, this is a handheld gaming device that allows you to play games from your Steam library. Steam is a service that allows you to buy and play games on your computer. Some games are only available for Windows machines, and I personally have a Mac computer, so the Steam Deck is a way for me to play those Windows only games! I also honestly prefer handheld gaming to computer gaming, so it’s perfect for me.
My first game on the Steam Deck was Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion. How amazing is that title?? It makes me giggle. The same is super cute and fun. You play as Turnip Boy, doing tasks for a questionable mayor in order to get your home back. The dialogue is hilarious! I ended up 100% completing this game, which I haven’t done for very many games haha.
I also played Vampire Survivors on the Deck, and I think the game is very well suited to it. Since it’s basically a game where you just have to move your character around, it’s nice to have a stick control to do that rather than using directional keys.
Things I Did
I wrote this post in April and am now just posting it (in May) because time just got away from me. I seriously can’t remember what things I did in March haha. It was my birthday month, and also my partner’s birthday month! We didn’t really do much to celebrate, we are both more low key on that front. We did order some tasty food (and boba for me). But otherwise, I guess I really didn’t do much this month haha.
Dang!! What an impressive reading/tv watching/gaming month! I don’t know how you fit it all in. I’m desperate to catch up on Incrytpid
“I’m a pretty big Star Wars fan” – are you now. I’d never have guessed. 😉 I agree Mando S3 wasn’t my fave (and tbh Andor kinda overtook my brain anyway LOL) but I will never say no to more Grogu and friends on my screen!! Really hoping for lots of Grogu x Mando adventures in S4.
I’m still very keen to try InCryptid!! Seeing you breeze through them was so fun. Sad that I don’t have access to the audiobooks though (and even on Audible UK, only like four books are available – 1 to 3 and then 11 or something, haha. I can totally read the series like that, right? 😂). But maybeeee I will charge up my Kindle and try book one as an ebook after I’m done with Cas Russell!
Hope we get to buddy watch more stuff soon, btw 🥰
Everyone has the best birthdays in March 😆 I really enjoyed the latest season of The Mandalorian but did find it quite lacking in others too but loved learning more about the mandalorians themselves!
Better late than never! I’m happy to read your wrap ups whenever you post them, haha.
