My Favorite Reads of 2024

I read 120 books last year, which kind of shocks me. I mean I know I read a lot, but for me that is still more than “normal.” But who knows what “normal” really means anyway. Naturally some reads were better than others, so here are my favorite reads of 2024!

I’ve added both Goodreads and Storygraph links for the books, with GR being Goodreads and SG being Storygraph!

  1. Mammoths at the Gates (GR || SG) by Nghi Vo (adult fantasy novella; 4th in an ongoing series of related novellas)
  2. Where the Dark Stands Still (GR || SG) by A.B. Poranek (young adult fantasy; standalone)
  3. The Theft of Sunlight (GR || SG) by Intisar Khanani (young adult fantasy; 1st in a completed duology, though it is best to read the prequel Thorn first)
  4. Monstress, Vol. 2: The Blood (GR || SG) by Marjorie M. Liu and Sana Takeda (adult fantasy graphic novel; 2nd volume in an ongoing series)
  5. Dragonfruit (GR || SG) by Makiia Lucier (young adult fantasy; standalone)
  6. Lunar Boy (GR || SG) by Jes and Cin Wibowo (middle grade science fiction graphic novel; standalone)
  7. Sleep No More (GR || SG) by Seanan McGuire (adult urban fantasy; 18th in an ongoing series)
  8. Squire (GR || SG) by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh (young adult fantasy; standalone)
  9. Bookshops & Bonedust (GR || SG) by Travis Baldree (adult fantasy; prequel to Legends & Lattes but can be read as a standalone)
  10. The Witchwood Knot (GR || SG) by Olivia Atwater (adult fantasy; 1st in an as yet unfinished trilogy – however this is a follow-up trilogy to the author’s Regency Faerie Tales trilogy, which is great and I recommend reading first)

I read more graphic novels last year than in previous years, evident by 3 of my top 10 books being graphic novels! And surprisingly only one sci-fi book here. I do want to make a priority of reading more sci-fi in 2025. This list is also split 50/50 between adult and YA/MG age categories, which is interesting to me. Overall for the year, I read twice as many adult novels as YA/MG novels. I guess this means that I just read a ton of stellar YA/MG!

Have you read any of these? Do you think you’ll try any of them? What were some of your top reads of the year?
