The Offset

September 13, 2021 by Mackenzie No Comments

Thank you so much to Angry Robot for sending me a copy for review. And for including me on the tour!

This book was such an interesting mix of science fiction, dystopian, and climate fiction. It was a really bleak look into the drastic measures that *could* happen if we don’t save our planet. I think the actual things in the book (the Offset, the prisons, etc) were a bit exaggerated. I mean this in the sense that I don’t know if they would happen in reality, though don’t quote me on that. With the way current events are turning out…anyway. These things just helped to intensify the point that the authors were trying to make. For this reason I can’t say that I really “enjoyed” the book, but I think it was really well done.

Sapphic Book Recommendations!

September 11, 2021 by Mackenzie 4 Comments

Hello and happy #SapphicSeptember! Just in case you weren’t sure what sapphic means, it refers to relationships between women. My friend Landice (@manic_femme on Twitter and @manicfemme on Instagram) is hosting a readathon this month focused on sapphic books. You can see her Twitter post about it here. She has a bunch of different prompts that look really fun!

So I was already thinking about sapphic books, and I had been brainstorming different things to try on Instagram – so I decided to make a book list. Instagram is obviously limited in how much information I can convey, so I’m gonna expand on my recommendations in this post! I hope you find some books that you’re interested in. There are quite a lot of books on this list (38 to be exact) so I’ll try to just post a few sentences about each one, so the post isn’t too long. I’ll also indicate the targeted age range (adult or young adult aka YA).

If you’re on Instagram, feel free to go check out my post! And if you feel so inclined, I would love if you’d share it (or share this blog post).

Looking Back at August 2021

September 1, 2021 by Mackenzie No Comments

Well I guess the summer kind of got away from me, since I missed doing a wrap up post last month. But I’m back with an August wrap up! I usually talk about more than just books, but somehow I managed to read 18!! books this month, so I’m gonna just stick with a bookish wrap up this time. This month I’ve been just relaxing and taking care of a few necessary relocation related things, so I’ve had quite a lot of free time. Clearly this translated into me reading all the time haha. There were a ton of great reads! I’m going to separate my reads into different genres to make it less overwhelming for you all (and for me lol).

The Maleficent Seven

August 31, 2021 by Mackenzie No Comments

Firstly, thank you so much to the lovely folks at Angry Robot for sending me a copy for review! And for including me on their tour for this book!

After I started reading this book, I realized that I don’t think I’ve really read a grimdark fantasy before? Okay I guess I’ve read Joe Abercrombie’s Shattered Sea trilogy, but that still felt a bit toned down (maybe because it’s young adult?). Anyway, I was kind of nervous. What if it’s too dark? Too gory? I was worried about liking it BUT it turns out I didn’t need to be worried. Yes, it was dark and gory and gruesome, of course. But it was also filled with humor and super interesting characters and scheming and so much more.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Wish I Could Read Again for the First Time

August 24, 2021 by Mackenzie 19 Comments

Thank you to Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl for hosting/organizing Top Ten Tuesday!

I love this topic!!! Rereading books is great, but often you can’t capture the same emotions and shock that you feel when you read a book for the first time. It was interesting to think about which books I’d choose, and the reasoning behind them. I wish there was some way we could actually do this though haha.
