The Happy Place 5: Characters I’d Choose for a Heist Squad!
Okay, imagine that you’ve been hired (or coerced) into executing a high stakes heist for a magical artifact. Which book characters would you choose to make up your heist squad? I’ll share the books that I chose characters from – can you guess which characters and why I chose them? I mean, before you read the rest of the post and find out hahaha.
Harrowhark Nonageismus (from Gideon the Ninth // Harrow the Ninth)
First up for my heist squad characters is the gloom mistress, the penumbral lady, the night boss, the bone empress herself, Harrow. I mean one of her obvious talents is bone magic – which can be used for so many different things. But Harrow is also very very smart. I would absolutely trust her to come up with a plan for our heist. Though, I might not trust her to tell us all of the pieces of the plan…. she’s a bit secretive that way.
Gideon the Ninth is the first book in an adult science fiction quartet.
Vanya Schmidt (from Little Thieves)
I mean, the title of the book that Vanya is in literally has the word “thieves” in it. So how could I not include her? Vanya is the adopted daughter of the gods Death and Fortune. She lives a double life, pretending to be a princess while also stealing jewels from the nobility. She’s a masterful thief – very clever, agile, inventive, and quick on her feet. Definitely the qualities you’d need for a point person in your heist squad.
Little Thieves is a young adult fantasy retelling of The Goose Girl.
Murderbot (from the Muderbot Diaries series)
Murderbot is good at basically everything – well, maybe not interaction with humans. So I guess that means that Murderbot won’t be our distraction. But it is good at hacking into computers, fighting, sneaking around, and all that great stuff. Plus it can almost do all of those things at once, so I’m definitely hiring it for my squad.
The Murderbot Diaries is an ongoing science fiction series of novellas and one novel.
AO (from Noor)
Speaking of computers, and technology in general, AO is a human woman who develops the power to control technology. She can make it do whatever she wants!!! In the age of technology, that skill would be invaluable for a heist. AO is also super strong, since she has some artificial limbs and other tech augments for her body.
Noor is an adult science fiction standalone short novel/long novella.
Xingyin (from Daughter of the Moon Goddess)
We’re going to need a lookout for our whole operation, and someone who can protect us from afar. Xingyin is an INCREDIBLE archer. Like so good that she can hit things with her eyes closed. She also has magic, and so combining those two things makes her the perfect person to be our sniper.
Daughter of the Moon Goddess is an adult fantasy and the first in a duology.
Which characters would you choose for your squad? What do you think of my choices?
