The Happy Place 5: Fall Vibes (specifically, witchy books!)
The Happy Place 5 is a monthly series where a few friends and I post 5 of our favorites books for a certain topic or theme. The name is from a Discord group that I am a part of. We created the space to have a positive environment for a handful of close friends. All of us are bookworms, and many of us are bookstagrammers and bloggers. So we decided to start a blog post series together! I’ll link my friends blogs and posts for this month’s topic at the end of this post
Welcome to the October edition of The Happy Place 5! It’s fall everyone! So of course we chose the topic “fall vibes” for this month’s post. That’s a very broad topic, I know. But this way it allows for tons of different interpretations! Could be ghosts, could be cozy falls vibes, or spooky reads, and on an on. I decided to write about witchy books! I also decided to do two sets of five books today – I know, I need to calm down. One set will be books I’ve read, and the other are books that I want to read! So what are my picks?
Witchy Books I’ve Read
- Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey [standalone adult fantasy]
- The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow [standalone adult fantasy]
- Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron [first in a series, YA fantasy]
- Summer of Salt by Katrina Leno [standalone YA fantasy]
- The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling [standalone adult fantasy-romance]
Witchy Books I Want to Read
- Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas [standalone YA fantasy]
- When We Were Magic by Sarah Gailey [standalone YA fantasy]
- Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu [standalone YA fantasy graphic novel]
- The Witch King by H.E. Edgmon [first in a series, YA fantasy]
- The Scapegracers by Hannah Abigail Clarke [first in a series, YA fantasy]
All of these are queer!! And I just realized they’re all young adult as well haha. I’ve heard really amazing things about all of them from my friends, so I can’t wait to get them.
Have you read any of these? What are some of your favorite witchy books?
I’ve been seeng The Ex Hex everywhere lately! Made me wonder if it’s over hyped or worth picking up? And I had no idea Summer of Salt had magic in it. In any case, your list is a reminder to bump it up ‘cause I’m way behind on Crini and Sana ‘s Katrina Leno recs. Heh.
Hmm I’d say it’s a bit overhyped. Like I def enjoyed it and it was fun, but it’s more of a very light fun read than a real standout. Hahahaha YESSSS I also need to get to more Leno lol.
Kingdom of Souls looks so intriguing, I’ve been meaning to read it, glad to see that it’s a favourite of yours! Lovely post, Mackenzie! <3
Ahhhh yes!! I hope you can get to it sometime soon, it’s incredible.
Cemetery Boys was one of my favorite reads last year. It’s an incredible book. I hope you get a chance to read it. I’ve had Kingdom of Souls on my shelf for too long. I really need to get to it. Year of the Witching is a pretty great witchy read and so is Zoraida Córdova’s Brooklyn Brujas series.
ohhh thanks for those last two recs!!
This is such a great list, I love witchy books so much!
