How I Choose My Books Book Tag!

I haven’t done a book tag in a while and I like the creative questions that people come up with! Other people are much more creative than I am LOL. Anyways I saw Meghan @ Whimsically Meghan do this one, and I really loved the questions so I thought I would do it myself! It’s all about discussing why you pick up the books that you do. Here’s a preview of some of the books that I chose for the prompts:

Think of a book you didn’t expect to enjoy, but did. Why did you read it in the first place?

Okay this is a weird question because nowadays I don’t pick up a book unless I expect to enjoy it haha. But I suppose that back in high school I was required to read certain books for classes, and didn’t necessarily expect to like them. One book that I ended up loving was Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I was always skeptical back then that the classics would be enjoyable reads, but Frankenstein is a fascinating book! I kind of want to a reread now, 10+ years later. Also holy shit, it’s been a long time since high school.

What book did you discover through a film/TV adaptation?

Oh this is a good question! The one that probably fits best for me with this is Stardust by Neil Gaiman. I saw the film and absolutely loved it, and only later did I find out it was based on his book! It probably took me five-ish years after I saw the film to actually read the book. And – prepare yourself for a blasphemous statement – I prefer the movie to the book. I KNOW I KNOW. It’s just that the movie is so vibrant and brilliant! And Robert de Niro just absolutely kills it as Captain Shakespeare.

Pick a book that you discovered through booktube/bookstagram/book blogs. Did it live up to the hype?

It’s hard to keep track of where I hear about books nowadays since I’m a lot of book communities haha. But I definitely only find out about romance/contemporary books via Bookstagram (and sometimes book blogs). So one of those was Beach Read by Emily Henry. It for sure lived up to the hype for me!! It’s one of my favorite romance books, as I feel like it has more substance than just the main romance. Not that there’s anything wrong with only wanting romance! But I guess I just prefer a good balance of lots of plot things haha.

Pick a book that someone personally recommended to you. What did you think of it?

My friend Crini (find her blog here, and Bookstagram here) is the queen of sci-fi, and one book that she recommended to me was Empress of Forever by Max Gladstone. I’m soooo glad she did, because I loved this book so much. It’s such a wild ride. The characters were so cool, the plot was intense and fast paced, and there were lots of great twists and turns.

Find a book on your bookshelves with a blue cover. What made you want to pick up this book?

Sun-Daughters, Sea-Daughters by Aimee Ogden is a beautiful blue book. Honestly the reason why I picked this up is because I love TorDotCom, and this is published by them haha. It’s a very simple reason. I see their name, I read the book. A year ago I even wrote a whole post about why I like them! You can read that here. I also have a review for this particular book here.

Stand in front of your bookshelf with your eyes closed and pick a book at random. How did you discover this book?

The random book that I picked is Here There Be Gerblins by the McElroy family, illustrated by Carey Pietsch. This is the first graphic novel in a series of seven books, which are all based on the podcast called The Adventure Zone. The podcast is one that I’ve mentioned on the blog a couple of times before. It’s a Dungeons and Dragons podcast that I listen to with my boyfriend. So naturally when I heard they’d be making graphic novels out of the story, I had to pick it up! I have all four of the novels that are out so far.

Find a book on your shelves with a one-word title. What drew you to this book?

I can’t NOT pick Middlegame by Seanan McGuire for this question. It’s like one of my favorite books ever! Which I’m sure you could tell if you saw my review for it (here). It’s absolutely mind blowing. I actually found out about this book from the TorDotCom Instagram I think! I had been following them because I had enjoyed other of their books, and then they posted about this one since it was upcoming. The premise sounded amazing, and then I actually won an ARC for it! And so began my obsession with Seanan McGuire.

Think of your all-time favorite books. When did you read these, and why did you pick them up in the first place?

This one is easy. My all time favs are all of Tamora Pierce’s books. I like her Tortall universe books slightly more than the Emelan universe ones, but all of them have a special place in my heart. I honestly can’t remember when I read these, I was maybe in elementary school? Or middle school? It was a long time ago. My mom had read them when they first came out, and she told me I should read them so I did! I’ll always be grateful that she introduced me to these books that were so formative.

How do you normally choose the books you buy/borrow/put on your TBR? I’d love to see any of you do this tag if you’d like to!
