A look back at my 2019 reads!
You know what’s absolutely RIDICULOUS? The fact that it is literally the year 2020 right now. How did that happen?? It’s the twenties now!! Again. Time to bring back the roaring twenties I guess. And that means it’s also time to take a look back at the books I read in 2019! I love sharing my top books, obviously, but I’m including a little bit more about authors I discovered and etc because how can you encapsulate an entire year in just a list of your top ten books?? Answer: you can’t. So here’s just a bunch of stuff about the books I read this year!
Top Ten Books
Here are my top ten, in no particular order! Well, except for Middlegame – it’s probably my favorite read of the year!
- Ashes of Honor by Seanan McGuire (review)
- Magic of Blood and Sea by Cassandra Rose Clarke
- An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors by Curtis Craddock (review)
- Everything All at Once by Katrina Leno (post about this book and Summer of Salt here)
- The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson
- Middlegame by Seanan McGuire (review)
- Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
- In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire
- A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White (review)
- The Gutter Prayer by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan
New Favorite Author
This may not come as a surprise to you, since I literally wrote an entire blog post about her lol but SEANAN MCGUIRE. If you didn’t see that, maybe you could tell from the fact that three of my top ten books are by her lol. Here is the blog post that I wrote about it. She’s got a huge body of work, and writes in many different sci-fi and fantasy subgenres. Her imagination is amazing, and she write wonderful characters and thought-provoking stories. I’M A SEANAN FANGIRL NOW.
Favorite Covers of Books I Read
Honestly I love all book covers. ALL OF THEM. They’re so pretty! I love seeing different style of covers and the artwork of different artists. So it’s really hard for me to pick out just ten – but if I choose any more I would just be going on forever haha. So here goes! Some of them overlap with my favorite reads haha.
Those colors π those designs π I looooove them!!!
Book(s) I Want to Reread
Middlegame. MIDDLEGAME. M I D D L E G A M E. You know when you say a word over and over again and then it sounds super weird? That just happened to me even though I was typing and not speaking haha. The point is Middlegame was a masterpiece and I neeeeed to read it again to bask in the glory.
New Fav Series I Started
I read sooo many books that were the first in a series this year! It seems that series are just much more popular for authors to write than standalones – and I get it! I do love the worldbuilding and character development you can have in longer series. It just makes it hard for me to keep up with all of my series π. Anyway here are some of my favorite new series that I’ve started!
- October Daye series by Seanan McGuire (what a surprise…lol)
- Wayward Children series by …..Seanan McGuire LOL
- The Salvagers series by Alex White
- Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews
- The Risen Kingdoms series by Curtis Craddock
Series I Completed
I haven’t finished quite as many series this year – I also always seem to start wayyyy more series than I complete. Oh well! So here are a few I did end up completing:
- Rebel of the Sands trilogy by Alwyn Hamilton
- Daughter of the Pirate King duology by Tricia Levenseller
- The Queens of Renthia trilogy by Sarah Beth Durst
- The Illuminae Files trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
- Shattered Realms quartet by Cinda Williams Chima
- Warcross duology by Marie Lu
- Monsters of Verity duology by Victoria Schwab
How was your year of reading? What were some of your favorites? What should I add to my 2020 reading list?
I feel like to sum things up my year was quite average till I read Heartstopper, then things peaked at Saga because I loved it so, so much! Although The Only Plane in the Sky did sneak in as a fave at the end of the year. π
Iβm hoping to get obsessed with something else this year and I have a feeling it could be October Daye! But I mustnβt start it now because Iβm not ready to get addicted to something yet π€£
