Looking Back at April 2021

Don’t mind me slightly panicking over here that it’s May tomorrow. It’s fine. IT’S FINE. Cue nervous laughter. Of course, end of the month means it’s time for a wrap up! I’ve noticed that each month I feel like I haven’t read that much, but it turns out to be quite a decent number. Maybe this is because I read so quickly, I don’t actually spend that much time reading? I don’t know haha. But overall I had a very enjoyable reading month! And I also watched a good show and played some great games!

What Did I Read?

  1. Shipped by Angie Hockman
  2. Burning Roses by S.L. Huang
  3. Accidentally Engaged by Farah Heron
  4. Twice Shy by Sarah Hogle
  5. Goddess in the Machine by Lora Beth Johnson
  6. The Bone Maker by Sarah Beth Durst (review here)
  7. In the Shadow of Spindrift House by Mira Grant
  8. A Kingdom for a Stage by Heidi Heilig (series review here)
  9. Perfect on Paper by Sophia Gonzales
  10. On This Unworthy Scaffold by Heidi Heilig (series review here)
  11. If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane

I read a good mix of genres this month! We’ve got young adult and adult fantasy, romance, contemporary, science fiction, and horror??? That last one shocked me too. In the Shadow of Spindrift house is a fantasy horror novella by Mira Grant. Mira is actually a pseudonym for one of my favs – can you guess who? Yes, you’re right. It’s Seanan McGuire. I don’t think I’ll be making a habit of reading horror, but I do like the way Seanan writes it.

One of my highlights from this month was Burning Roses. It’s a lovely novella featuring two older protagonists who have both been in sapphic relationships. It weaves in lots of different folktales and myths from different cultures, and I loved it. I hope that S.L. Huang writes more novellas in this style. I also really loved The Bone Maker, which also featured a group of older protagonists!! The magic was super cool too. You can check out my review for that one if you want to read a few more of my thoughts!

What Did I Play?

Last month I mentioned that I play a game called Teamfight Tactics. This month, a new set of the game came out so I’ve been playing that! The main game mechanics stay the same, but with each set the units and traits are different, so it keeps the game fresh. One of my best friends got me into it, and I’ve played a few games with him. It’s nice to be able to voice chat while we play and talk about the game, but also talk about whatever else and catch up.

I also (finally) starting play the game Hades on my Switch. You guys. If you game, you gotta try this game. It’s so much fun!!! The premise of the game is that you play as the son of Hades (called Zagreus) and you are trying to escape from the underworld. Different gods and goddesses appear as non-player characters, as do other figure from Greek mythology. There is a ton of depth to the story, and to the stories of the different characters. And the character art is STUNNING. I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH!!!! I may have already put 60+ hours into it….haha.

What Did I Watch?

If you are at all plugged into the book world, you may have hear that the Shadow and Bone tv show aired on Netflix about a week ago! If you don’t know anything about it, it’s based on the Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo. The novels are young adult fantasy novels, and I really enjoyed them. I ended up watching the entire show on the day it came out (it’s only 8 episodes okay??). It was so much fun! I thought it was really well done. I do have some complaints, but yknow, nothing is perfect. Hopefully the wait for the next season isn’t too long, because I need more haha. If you are at all interested in the show, I definitely recommend checking it out. My family and my former roommates have also watched it! Not all of them have read the books, so it is enjoyable even if you don’t want to read the books.

How was your April? Did you have any highlights from the month from what you read, watched, or played?
