In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.

Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.

Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.

Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?

I have finally read Nevernight and it was as bloody and violent as it was hyped to be. There’s probably no content warning that wasn’t triggered by this book so just a heads up if you’re on the fence! If you love assassins, coming-of-age stories, and gritty books, this one’s for you.

The main character Mia is set on a path of vengeance and in order to acquire the skills she needs for her goal, she enters the Red Church, a school for assassins. I LOVE stories with some type of learning/school system, specially when it comes to magic or deadly skills, and it was my favourite thing about Nevernight. Think of it as Harry Potter and The Poppy War having a horny baby, and tada.

Stabbiness aside, Nevernight was a bit of hit and miss for me. A big chunk of the beginning was so hard for me to get through because of the footnotes. Some of them were too long and took me away from the story and I’m not even sure half of them were necessary. I know many readers loved the footnotes, so this is just my preference. I think this is one aspect of Kristoff’s style that isn’t for me, along with certain lines that are often emphasized to achieve a badass effect. The footnotes pretty much disappear when Mia gets to the school though, and that definitely helped me enjoy the story. Learning about weapons, thievery, manipulation, and poisons? YES PLEASE. The book also has non-human characters and I basically adored the sentient shadow creatures.

I appreciated Kristoff for moments when he showed rather than tell and I hope this happens more often in place of his footnotes. Mia made a lot of hard choices in this book and I LOVE how it was handled. Becoming an assassin is bound to change a person and I’m all about the questions, internal struggle, and everything in between.

Nevernight was one bloody ride and while I hit a lot of bumps at the start, the last third of it was a rollercoaster that left me excited for the next one. Listen to the audiobook by the way, because Holter Graham does a PHENOMENAL job narrating and I’m officially in love with his talent.
