#SciFiMonth2023 – Best Laid Plans (SciFi Month TBR)

Happy November friends! And welcome to another edition of #SciFiMonth, which is run by imyril (There’s Always Room For One More), Lisa (Dear Geek Place), Annemieke (A Dance With Books), and Mayri (BookForager). If you want to know more about it, check out imyril’s intro post here! I’ve “taken part” in SciFi Month the past two years, but I put that in quotes because I think both years I only posted one or two posts during the whole month haha. Maybe this time it sticks?? Stay tuned to see how I do. But anyway, as always, the first post of the month is your SciFi Month TBR. I’m going to highlight a few books that I definitely want to read. And then I’ll also mention some others on my TBR that I’m excited for! Also – if you saw any of these on my TBR in years past….NO YOU DIDN’T.

The Fractured Dark

This is the second book in Megan E. O’Keefe’s trilogy, The Devoured Worlds. I absolutely devoured (hehe sorry) the first book, The Blighted Stars. I wrote a review of it here on the blog in September. I’ll include a brief excerpt from that review:

…this book whips ass. It’s an incredible start to a sci-fi trilogy that has elements of horror (in a creepy, survival way, not a scary way) and dystopian fiction (in a corporations controlling society way). It starts off with a bang and doesn’t let up the whole time. Also, the casual queerness is a wonderful thing to see!

I can’t wait to get back to my favs Naira and Tarquin, and see what shenanigans book two has in store for them.

Velocity Weapon + Chaos Vector

Continuing on the Megan E. O’Keefe train, I need to finish up her previous sci-fi trilogy, the Protectorate trilogy. I read the first book (Velocity Weapon) a while ago, so I need to do a reread of that. And my My Goodreads review of it was supremely unhelpful in reminding me of any plot points, since all it says is “amazing.” After I reread, I’ll continue with the second book, Chaos Vector! And probably then the third book too haha.

The Space Between Worlds

Literally everyone I know who has read this has absolutely loved it. It’s got multiverses, doppelgängers dying under mysterious circumstances, lots of secrets, and so much more. The Goodreads page also says that it is “a powerful examination of identity, privilege, and belonging.” This was published as a standalone, but I think recently there was another book announced that is a companion novel, or one set in the same universe. Same universes, plural? Same multiverse?? Hahaha. Well anyway, that’s just more motivation for me to get to this one soon!

Stars, Hide Your Fires

This is a young adult scifi murder mystery set in space!!! And even better, it’s pitched as: “KNIVES OUT goes sci-fi in this gripping YA mystery set in space, perfect for fans of THE DARKNESS OUTSIDE US and IRON WIDOW.” I mean come on, doesn’t that sound amazing!! And it’s queeeeeeeer. The main character is a wanted thief with a scrappy crew, and we all know how much I love crews/found family. I think I’m really going to love this.

Also, the author is the writer of the audio drama/podcast THE STRANGE CASE OF STARSHIP IRIS, which many of my friends love.

and many other options….

Here are some of the other books on my (tentative) SciFi Month TBR that I’m super excited for!

Are you participating this year? If yes, what is on your SciFi Month TBR? If not, what do you think you’ll read this month?
